IngramSpark's error messages are notoriously cryptic. "Your file contains ICC color profiles" tells you what's wrong but not what it means or how to fix it. Here are the 10 most common rejection reasons with plain-English explanations and exact fixes for each.

Reason 1 — Most common

Embedded ICC color profiles Auto-fixed by BookReady

ICC profiles are color management data embedded in your PDF. IngramSpark's presses use device CMYK directly and can't use ICC profiles — they cause unpredictable color shifts. Almost every PDF exported from Canva, Word, or consumer design tools contains these.

How to fixUpload to BookReady. ICC profiles are stripped and replaced with device colorspaces automatically. Takes under 30 seconds.
Reason 2

Not PDF/X-1a compliant Auto-fixed by BookReady

PDF/X-1a is a print production standard. It requires fonts embedded, colors in CMYK or grayscale, no transparency, no layers, and no interactive elements. Most design tool exports don't meet this standard out of the box.

How to fixBookReady uses Ghostscript — the same engine professional print shops use — to perform a true PDF/X-1a conversion. This is what Adobe Acrobat Pro charges $240/year for.
Reason 3

Fonts not embedded

If a font isn't embedded in your PDF, IngramSpark's press substitutes a fallback font — your book prints in the wrong typeface. This is the #1 silent failure: the file uploads, but the printed book looks wrong.

How to fixBookReady detects unembedded fonts and tells you exactly which fonts are missing and which pages they appear on. Re-export from your design tool with font embedding enabled. In Word: File → Options → Save → "Embed fonts in the file".
Reason 4

Total Ink Coverage over 240% Detected by BookReady

Total Ink Coverage (TIC) is the sum of CMYK values. IngramSpark's maximum is 240%. Affinity Publisher's default "rich black" is 100C+100M+100Y+100K = 400% TIC — causing rejection. Dark backgrounds and deep colors are the usual culprits.

How to fixIn Affinity Publisher: change your black to C0+M0+Y0+K100 (100% TIC). For colored backgrounds, reduce the ink values until total stays under 240%. BookReady flags exactly which pages are over the limit.
Reason 5

Images below 300 DPI Detected by BookReady

Images at low resolution print blurry. IngramSpark requires 300 DPI at the placed size. Canva's "300 DPI" export label is misleading — it doesn't upsample low-res source images.

How to fixReplace flagged images with higher-resolution versions. BookReady tells you exactly which pages and what DPI was found. There is no software fix — you need a better source image.
Reason 6

Missing bleed or incorrect TrimBox Auto-fixed by BookReady

IngramSpark requires 0.125" bleed on all sides. If your TrimBox is missing or incorrectly set, full-page backgrounds will have a white edge after trimming.

How to fixBookReady auto-corrects the TrimBox to match IngramSpark's requirements. If your design doesn't extend to the bleed edge, you'll need to re-export with bleed enabled in your design tool.
Reason 7

Odd page count Detected by BookReady

Print books must have an even number of pages. An odd page count means one side of the last sheet would be blank — IngramSpark rejects this.

How to fixAdd a blank page at the end of your document before exporting. BookReady tells you your exact page count so you know what to fix.
Reason 8

Active hyperlinks Auto-fixed by BookReady

Clickable links in a print PDF are meaningless and get flagged by IngramSpark. They're common in Word and Google Docs exports where URLs are automatically hyperlinked.

How to fixBookReady strips all hyperlink annotations automatically. The URL text stays visible in your book — only the clickable behavior is removed.
Reason 9

Transparency or layers Auto-fixed by BookReady

Transparent elements and live layers violate PDF/X-1a requirements. They're common in InDesign, Affinity Publisher, and Canva when using drop shadows, opacity settings, or layered graphics.

How to fixBookReady flattens all transparency as part of the PDF/X-1a conversion process. No manual action needed.
Reason 10

Spot colors / Pantone swatches Auto-fixed by BookReady

Spot colors and Pantone swatches cause color shift or outright rejection on POD platforms. They often sneak in from a designer's template or logo file.

How to fixBookReady automatically converts spot colors to CMYK equivalents. If you need exact brand color matching, work with a commercial print shop instead.
