Canva is one of the most popular tools indie authors use to format books and covers. It's fast, visual, and affordable. But Canva's PDF exports consistently trigger IngramSpark's ICC color profile error — and Canva itself has no way to fix this. The good news is that BookReady can strip those profiles automatically.
How to export from Canva for IngramSpark
Use "PDF Print" not "PDF Standard"
In Canva, click Share → Download → change file type to "PDF Print". This is higher quality than PDF Standard and includes crop marks and bleed options.
Enable "Crop marks and bleed"
Check the "Crop marks and bleed" option in the download dialog. This adds 0.125" bleed around your pages — required by IngramSpark. Without this, full-page backgrounds will have a white edge after trimming.
Use CMYK colors in your design
Canva Pro lets you set colors using CMYK values. Use this for any solid color backgrounds or text. RGB colors in Canva are converted at export and can shift unpredictably in print.
Run through BookReady
Upload your Canva PDF to BookReady. It will automatically strip the ICC profiles, perform PDF/X-1a conversion, correct the TrimBox, and remove any active links — everything IngramSpark needs that Canva can't provide.
The 300 DPI myth in Canva
Canva's "PDF Print" export is labeled as 300 DPI, but this is misleading. Canva sets the DPI metadata tag to 300 but it cannot upsample images that were originally lower resolution. If you used a stock photo, a screenshot, or an image from the internet, the actual pixel count may produce blurry print results even though Canva says 300 DPI.
BookReady's resolution check identifies which images are actually below 300 DPI at their placed size — not just the metadata tag. If your images are flagged, you need a higher-resolution source file from your photographer or designer.
Canva works better for covers than interiors. Interior text pages in Canva often have font rendering and bleed issues. For text-heavy interiors, consider Atticus or Affinity Publisher. For image-heavy books like children's books or coloring books, Canva can work well once the ICC and resolution issues are fixed.
