Why IngramSpark keeps rejecting your PDF
IngramSpark's error messages are notoriously unhelpful. "File does not meet specifications" or "An unknown error has occurred" can mean any one of a dozen different technical problems — and IngramSpark won't tell you which one.
BookReady checks your PDF against all 18 of IngramSpark's known rejection triggers and tells you in plain English what's wrong, which pages are affected, and exactly how to fix it. The check takes about 30 seconds and is completely free.
Why just converting to PDF/X-1a isn't enough
Many free tools will convert your PDF to PDF/X-1a format — but conversion alone doesn't fix unembedded fonts, low-resolution images, incorrect bleed, odd page counts, or Total Ink Coverage violations. A PDF can pass PDF/X-1a conversion and still be rejected by IngramSpark. You need a full compliance check, not just a format conversion.
All 18 IngramSpark compliance checks
✓
PDF/X-1a compliance Auto-fixed
IngramSpark requires PDF/X-1a:2001 format. Transparency, layers, and missing output intent tags all cause rejection. BookReady auto-converts using Ghostscript — the same engine professional print shops use.
✓
ICC color profiles Auto-fixed
Embedded ICC profiles are one of the top silent rejection causes. They look fine on screen but IngramSpark rejects the file outright. BookReady strips them and replaces with correct device colorspaces.
✓
Font embedding Flagged with details
Unembedded fonts get substituted at press — your book prints in the wrong typeface. BookReady reports the exact font name and every page number affected.
✓
Total Ink Coverage (240% limit) Flagged with pages
IngramSpark requires TIC at 240% or below. Rich black in Affinity Publisher defaults to 400% TIC. BookReady is one of the only tools that checks for this specifically.
✓
Image resolution (300 DPI minimum) Flagged with DPI per page
Images below 300 DPI print blurry. BookReady reports the exact DPI and pixel dimensions of every low-res image, including whether it is a source file problem or a placed-too-large problem.
✓
Bleed and TrimBox Auto-fixed
IngramSpark requires 0.125 inch bleed on all sides. Wrong bleed or a missing TrimBox causes content to be cut off at trim. BookReady auto-corrects the TrimBox to platform spec.
✓
Spot / Pantone colors Auto-fixed
Pantone swatches from designer templates cause color shift or outright rejection. BookReady detects and converts them to CMYK equivalents automatically.
✓
Encryption and passwords Auto-fixed
A password-protected PDF cannot be processed by any platform. BookReady removes encryption automatically.
✓
Page count (must be even) Flagged with fix instructions
Print books require an even page count. An odd page count means a missing blank final page or automatic rejection.
✓
Color mode in B&W interiors Flagged with pages
RGB images in a black-and-white interior get charged at color print rates — up to $6 extra per copy. BookReady flags the exact pages.
✓
Page size consistency Auto-fixed
A single page at a slightly different size causes binding failures. BookReady normalizes outlier pages to the majority size automatically.
✓
Active hyperlinks Auto-fixed
Clickable links are flagged by print platforms. BookReady strips link annotations while preserving the URL text.
✓
JavaScript and interactive elements Auto-fixed
Interactive PDF elements cause automatic rejection on upload. BookReady removes all interactive content automatically.
✓
Crop marks Flagged
IngramSpark adds its own trim guides. Crop marks in the file cause double-marking and misaligned trimming.
✓
Overprint settings Auto-fixed
Wrong overprint mode causes white halos around text and CMYK color shifts at press. BookReady auto-corrects OPM where possible.
✓
Document metadata Flagged
Missing title and author metadata shows up wrong in library catalogs. BookReady reports what's missing and how to add it.
✓
Spine width calculation Included in every report
BookReady calculates your exact spine width across all four IngramSpark paper stocks based on your page count. Included automatically in every scan report.

PDF/X-1a conversion vs a full compliance check

Which software causes the most IngramSpark rejections
Microsoft Word
Word on Windows caps all images at 200 DPI when exporting to PDF, regardless of your quality settings. This is a known limitation with no in-Word workaround. BookReady detects this specific pattern and tells you to re-export using LibreOffice (free), which preserves full resolution.
Canva
Canva's "export at 300 DPI" option sets the document's DPI metadata tag but does not upsample low-resolution images placed inside the design. If you uploaded a low-res image into Canva, exporting at 300 DPI won't fix it. BookReady measures actual pixel dimensions, not the metadata label. See our full guide: Why Canva's 300 DPI export still gets flagged →
Affinity Publisher
Affinity Publisher's default rich black setting outputs at 400% Total Ink Coverage — well above IngramSpark's 240% limit. This is one of the most common rejections we see. BookReady flags the exact pages affected. See our guide: Affinity Publisher and IngramSpark →
Google Docs
Google Docs compresses images when you insert them and again when you export to PDF, often dropping resolution significantly. It also cannot produce PDF/X-1a output natively. BookReady catches the resolution and compliance issues.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check if my PDF is ready for IngramSpark?
Upload your PDF to BookReady at bookready.net/app. It runs 18 automated checks against IngramSpark's exact specifications and returns results in about 30 seconds. The check is free — you only pay $9 if you want to download the auto-fixed file.
What are the most common IngramSpark PDF rejection reasons?
The most common causes are: embedded ICC color profiles, missing PDF/X-1a compliance, unembedded fonts, Total Ink Coverage over 240%, images below 300 DPI, and incorrect bleed or TrimBox settings.
Is a free PDF/X-1a converter enough to pass IngramSpark?
No. PDF/X-1a conversion fixes color profiles and transparency, but it cannot fix unembedded fonts, low-resolution images, odd page counts, Total Ink Coverage violations, or incorrect bleed. A file can pass PDF/X-1a conversion and still be rejected. You need a full compliance check.
Does BookReady work for children's books and illustrated books?
Yes — and illustrated books especially benefit from BookReady because they have more potential image resolution issues. BookReady checks every embedded image individually and reports the exact DPI and pixel dimensions of any image that fails the 300 DPI requirement.
What is Total Ink Coverage and why does IngramSpark flag it?
Total Ink Coverage (TIC) is the sum of all CMYK values on a page. IngramSpark requires TIC at 240% or lower. Affinity Publisher's default rich black is 100C+100M+100Y+100K = 400% TIC. BookReady detects TIC violations and flags the affected pages with instructions for how to fix the black settings in your source file.
Does BookReady work for KDP Print, B&N Press, and Draft2Digital too?
Yes. BookReady checks against all four major print platforms. Use the multi-platform scan at bookready.net/scan-all to check your PDF against IngramSpark, KDP Print, B&N Press, and Draft2Digital in a single upload.
Is my manuscript kept private?
Yes. Your file is uploaded over HTTPS, scanned, and automatically deleted within 24 hours. BookReady never stores or trains on the content of your manuscript. See the full policy at bookready.net/security.
